Cleaning "Browser Cache"

About Browser Cache:
When using the Internet, a cashe on your computer stores copies of web pages you have visited in order to increase retrieval time in the future. These storage areas called caches (pronounced 'cash') are intended to make Internet browsing faster. However, if you don't clean your browser's cache regularly, the files that accumulate can cause errors in your browsing experience. You should clean your browser cache about once a week to help your computer run at top speed.

What are computer viruses?

One of the most useful things about the Internet is the way it connects you to people and information from all over the world.

Unfortunately, it can also expose you to malicious and unwelcome intruders - like computer viruses.

A computer virus is a simple program, but one that's been specifically designed to damage or take control of your computer.

Viruses reach your computer in two main ways:

1. Viruses that spread using email

Viruses most commonly travel via email and typically, they are hidden in what's called an attachment.

2. Viruses that spread using the Internet

Your computer can also be attacked by a virus just by being connected to the Internet. Often called 'Internet worms', these types of viruses travel across the many networks that make up the World Wide Web, looking for vulnerable computers to attack.

What damage can computer viruses do?

Viruses can affect your computer in several ways:

Some are little more than pranks. For example, they might display an obscene message on your screen, or instruct your computer to make beeping noises for a short period of time.
Others are far more destructive. They can delete important information and files from your computer's hard drive, or even attack the hard drive itself so that it will no longer work and needs replacing.
The most dangerous computer viruses are those that are programmed to spread rapidly. Once inside your computer, they duplicate themselves and then send a copy of the virus to everybody listed in your email address book. As a result this type of virus can - and has - infected thousands and even millions of other computers around the world.
All told, viruses are a serious threat, and the damage they cause continues to cost a huge amount of time and money, for both individual users and businesses.

So, to prevent your computer from being damaged, or infecting other people's computers (like your friends or family!) it's very important that your computer is protected.

How can I Protect my Computer?

When it comes to viruses that affect humans, most doctors will tell you that preventing them in the first place is much better than trying to cure them afterwards.

Well, the same is true of computer viruses, and by following three important steps, you can 'vaccinate' your computer against the vast majority of harmful effects.

Step 1. Install anti-virus software on your computer

This software is different to Xtra's email anti-virus filter. Find out why it's different and how it adds another layer of protection against viruses.

Step 2: Update your Microsoft Windows software

Microsoft regularly reviews its software to fix any security problems that viruses might exploit. So, to make sure your software is protected as well, it's very important that you update it regularly.

Step 3: Install a firewall on your computer

Having a firewall on your computer is like having a security guard on your front door - you can see who's at the door before you decide if they can come in. Find out more about how a firewall can protect you.
